  • Two new spas in Mendoza

  • Just as authentic spas in Argentina use holistic treatments with locally-grown ingredients and traditional methods of maintaining health and beauty, the best spas in Mendoza use the region's most famous crop - grapes.

The spas at Valle de Uco, Golf, Wine & Country's luxury hotel and boutique hotel both use the latest vinotherapy treatments using grape skin, leaves, pulp and pips from the wineries of Mendoza that are left over after the wine-making process. These extracts contain polyphenol antioxidants called resveratrol and quercetin which are a thousand times more effective than vitamin E at combating the ageing process and the action of free radicals.

The spa at the luxury hotel will be a full destination spa which will service a handful of treatment rooms at the boutique hotel.

  • Vinotherapy

  • Vinotherapy in its modern form really took off in 1993 when a French company called Caudalie collaborated with the Faculty of Pharmaceuticals at Bordeaux University in applying the grape's antioxidant-rich properties to spa treatments. Caudalie trademarked the word "vinothérapie" and introduced a line of high-end products rich in wine and grape seed oil. In 1999 it opened its first spa at Les Sources de Caudalie near Bordeaux where masseuses use artisanal wine-making rakes to massage energy paths on the spine. Over the last decade, vinotherapy spas have appeared in many of the other Great Wine Capitals.

At vinotherapy spas in Argentina, guests can bathe in barrels of bubbling waters spiked with cabernet and soak in an aromatic blend of grape syrups, juices, pips and grape seed oils. Vinotherapy spas further afield also offer wine lovers Shiraz or Chardonnay cocoon wraps, wine caskets pulsing with Cabernet jets, face masks laden with vineyard flowers and full-body grape seed oil massages. Some have even sell beauty products including grape lotions, teas, scrubs and even rich body butters using grape seed, lavender, rosemary, chamomile and jojoba.
